The rapper’s personal debt collector is suing him for nearly $40 million over a debt he claims he owes.
The lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court in San Francisco, alleges that West owes more than $80 million and has already paid nearly $30 million to creditors in the past two years.
West’s personal creditor is John Gatto, a bankruptcy lawyer who represents a number of wealthy clients.
The lawsuit says Gatto has already billed West $11 million in fees and legal fees over the past few years.
The suit says Gotti has also billed West for more than 40% of his legal fees.
Gatto’s lawyers say they have been working on a resolution to the debt for more as West continues to negotiate with creditors over his remaining debts.
Gotti has been representing the rapper since 2009, when he filed for bankruptcy protection.
He is the owner of the real estate business Gatto Homes, which has offices in West’s hometown of Westwood, California.
West has been trying to sell his assets in recent years to keep the debt from accumulating.
His lawyer has said that West has more than enough money to pay his creditors and still not be forced to sell.
Gottos legal team says it has reached out to a handful of creditors in recent months, but so far has been unsuccessful in reaching out to any of them.
